Behavior

At Nottingham West Elementary School we believe that learning is optimized in a safe, positive environment that supports as students right to a fair and appropriate education. Over the years our team has worked very hard to create a positive incentive behavior system that teaches students not only what behavior we expect but then supports them in making healthy choices.
This year we are working to train all staff in the use of the PAWS behavior management system. As Nottingham West Wildcat's we are teaching our students our behavioral expectations with the catchy acronym:
We are using blue and yellow behavior slips to communicate noteworthy behaviors that are happening in school. The blue slip is designed to congratulate the student on a job well done. The yellow slip is designed to remind students that they need to work harder on their behavior and encourage them to do their best. The slips also assist in communicating to the classroom teacher the behaviors that are happening at recess/lunch and around the school for planning intervention and/or programs to better meet the needs of students.
Here' s how it works:
Blue Slips
- When a lunch/recess monitor observes a student exhibiting one of the PAWS behaviors in an appropriate manner, the student is given a "Blue Slip".
- The blue slip is entered into a grade level drawing at the end of the week. The earn a chance to win a reward (approximately 10 slips are drawn)
- Each quarter 8 blue slips are randomly drawn (per grade level) to share lunch with administration.
Yellow slips
- When a lunch/recess monitor observes a student exhibiting one of the PAWS behaviors in an inappropriate manner, the students is given a "Yellow Slip".
- The yellow slip is followed up by the classroom teacher to reinforce cafeteria/recess behavior.
